RBSE vs CBSE which is better? Quick answer
Quick answer
Neither is better in law. RBSE is the Rajasthan state board; CBSE is the national board. The difference that is easy to check is the exam fee, the language options and the school you can attend. Use the choice table below, and ask your school which board it follows.
RBSE and CBSE: side-by-side facts
| Point | RBSE | CBSE |
|---|---|---|
| Who runs it | Board of Secondary Education, Rajasthan, Ajmer; set up 1957 under a state Act | Central Board of Secondary Education, an autonomous organisation under the Ministry of Education (CBSE notification) |
| Exam fee 2026-27 | Rs 850 per candidate; Rs 200 per practical subject (ETV Bharat, reported) | Rs 1,600 for five subjects; Rs 320 per extra subject; Rs 160 per Class 12 practical subject (Moneycontrol, reported) |
| Class 10 exams | Two exams from 2026-27, reported; details differ by outlet | A compulsory February exam and an optional May exam from 2026 to improve up to three subjects |
| Question papers | CBSE-pattern papers from 2026-27, reported | CBSE pattern |
| Books | NCERT books for many subjects, board books for others (board syllabus PDF) | NCERT books |
| Result portal | rajeduboard.rajasthan.gov.in and rajresults.nic.in | cbse.gov.in and its linked portals |
| Based in | Rajasthan | All of India |
The fee and exam-pattern items are reported figures; we could not open the RBSE fee notice, and the CBSE fee comes from a news report on the list of candidates (LOC) rules. See cbse.gov.in for the current notice.
Exam fee: what the numbers do and do not say
| Board and year | Fee |
|---|---|
| RBSE, until 2025-26 | Rs 600 regular; Rs 650 private; Rs 100 per practical subject |
| RBSE, 2026-27 (reported) | Rs 850 for both; Rs 200 per practical subject |
| CBSE, 2026-27 (reported) | Rs 1,600 for five subjects; Rs 320 for each extra subject; Rs 160 per practical subject in Class 12; Rs 2,000 extra if the school files late |
Three cautions. The RBSE fee is per candidate, and the CBSE fee is for five subjects, so the units differ. The board fee is only a small part of the cost, because the school fee, books and tuition are far larger and vary with the school. The CBSE fee is paid through the school (the LOC), not by the student directly, as Moneycontrol explains. We did not find a board-owned page to cite for either figure.
Two Class 10 exams: both boards
CBSE held its first two-exam system for Class 10 in 2026: a compulsory February exam and a second exam in May, optional for eligible students, who can improve up to three subjects among Science, Maths, Social Science and languages, and the higher score counts (CBSE notification and the controller of examinations in the Indian Express). The CBSE notification is a scanned PDF we could not read as text, so we follow the Indian Express. For RBSE, reports say a similar two-exam system starts in 2026-27, with the Indian Express and Jagran Josh disagreeing on details such as supplementary use. See RBSE result kab aayega 2026 and RBSE kya hai.
Syllabus and books
Many subjects overlap because both boards use NCERT books for core subjects. The RBSE Class 12 syllabus for 2025-26 names NCERT books for English (Flamingo and Vistas), Economics, Political Science and Accountancy, and the board’s own book for Public Administration (see the board’s Class 12 syllabus PDF for 2025-26). The syllabus differs in the details: the unit marks, the order of chapters, the practicals and the optional subjects. A student who changes boards in Class 11 should compare the syllabus of the subject, not assume that it is the same. The board context is in RBSE kya hai.
Language and subject options
The RBSE Class 12 syllabus lists Rajasthani literature (subject code 26), Sindhi, Gujarati and Punjabi literature, and Sanskrit literature, plus Hindi and English. RBSE also runs Sanskrit stream exams (Praveshika and Upadhyay). CBSE has its own, longer list of languages. If a language or subject matters to you, check the subject list of the school and the board before you choose.
Recognition and entrance exams
| Exam | What the eligibility says about boards |
|---|---|
| CUET UG 2026 | Class 12 or equivalent from recognised central or state boards (NTA bulletin, as summarised by Careers360) |
| NEET UG 2026 | Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English from a recognised board; a minimum aggregate in PCB (Careers360, Shiksha) |
| JEE Main 2026 | Class 12 or equivalent; Physics, Mathematics and one more subject (Careers360) |
The NTA sets the exams and the bulletin, available on nta.ac.in, is the final word. We did not find any rule that gives one state board an advantage. Institutions may set their own rules for admission, so ask them. For state exams in Rajasthan, such as the teacher-training entry exams, see BSTC (Pre D.El.Ed) complete guide.
Results: why we do not compare pass percentages
The RBSE Class 10 pass percentage was 94.23 in 2026 and the Class 12 pass percentages were 97.54 (Arts), 97.52 (Science) and 93.64 (Commerce); see RBSE 10th class result 2026 and RBSE 12th result 2026. We do not set these next to the CBSE figures. The two boards test different students, different schools, different papers and have different counting rules. A higher percentage does not show a better education, and the checking rules are explained in RBSE checking aur marking.
Exam calendar: what we know for 2026
| Item | RBSE | CBSE |
|---|---|---|
| Class 10 exam | 12 to 28 February 2026 | Mid-February start, as reported for the CBSE two-exam scheme |
| Class 12 exam | 12 February to 11 March 2026 | Not compared |
| Class 10 result | 24 March 2026, 1:00 PM | Not compared |
| Second Class 10 exam | Two exams reported from 2026-27; we found no dates | Optional May exam, first held in 2026 |
We left the CBSE result dates out because we did not read a CBSE source for them. The RBSE dates are on RBSE result kab aayega 2026.
Questions to ask a school before you choose a board
- Which board does the school follow for Class 9 to 12, and for which subjects and streams?
- What is the medium of instruction in each subject, and are there English and Hindi medium sections?
- What is the school fee, and what does it include, apart from the board exam fee?
- Which optional subjects and languages are offered, and are the teachers in place?
- How does the school handle the practical and the internal marks, since they carry 20 or 30 marks in many subjects?
- What happens if I move to another school or state in Class 11?
Costs beyond the exam fee
The exam fee, at Rs 850 or Rs 1,600, is a small part of what a family spends. School fees, books, uniforms, tuition and transport differ by school more than by board. State government schools in Rajasthan follow RBSE (central government schools such as Kendriya Vidyalayas follow CBSE), and fees in private schools vary within both boards. We found no source that compares the total cost of the two boards, so we do not claim that one is cheaper to study in.
Who might choose which?
| Situation | What the facts suggest |
|---|---|
| You will study in a Rajasthan government school | RBSE, because the school follows it; ask about the medium |
| A school near you offers both | Compare the school, the teachers, the fee and the language options, not only the board |
| You may move to another state | CBSE is a national board with schools across India, which some families see as easier; we found no rule that makes a move impossible with RBSE |
| You prefer Rajasthani or Sindhi as a subject | Check the RBSE subject list |
| You are comparing the cost of the exam | RBSE fee is lower on paper, but the school cost matters more |
Moving between boards
The usual points are a transfer certificate, a migration certificate and the new school’s seat and subject rules. The RBSE student services page lists a migration certificate at Rs 200 (undated). For marksheet and duplicate rules, see RBSE marksheet download and correction. For what to do after Class 10 and Class 12 in either board, see RBSE 10th ke baad stream kaise chune and RBSE 12th ke baad kya kare.
Common claims we checked
| Claim | What we found |
|---|---|
| “CBSE is the only board accepted for competitive exams” | The NTA bulletins we read accept recognised state boards too |
| “RBSE checks harder than CBSE” | No source measures checking strictness; see RBSE checking aur marking |
| “CBSE is always easier” | No data we found supports this |
| “RBSE has no NCERT” | The board PDF names NCERT books for many subjects |
What we could not compare
- The official CBSE fee notice and the RBSE fee notice (we relied on news reports).
- The text of the CBSE two-exam notification (a scanned PDF).
- Fair pass percentages: not comparable.
- Teaching quality, which varies by school and cannot be assigned to a board.
RBSE vs CBSE FAQs
RBSE or CBSE: which is better in Rajasthan?
Neither is better in law or in recognition. Both are Indian school boards and both lead to the same entrance exams. The better choice depends on the school you can attend, the medium, the fee and whether you may move states. See the choice table below.
What is the difference between RBSE and CBSE?
RBSE is the Rajasthan state board; CBSE is the national board under the central Ministry of Education. They differ in who runs them, the exam fee, the portals, the language options and some of the syllabus, though many subjects use NCERT books.
Is RBSE syllabus the same as CBSE?
Not identical. The RBSE Class 12 syllabus for 2025-26 lists NCERT books for many subjects, but the board has its own books and subjects such as Rajasthani literature. The board also plans CBSE-pattern question papers from 2026-27.
Which board has the lower exam fee?
For 2026-27 the RBSE fee was reported at Rs 850 per candidate and Rs 200 per practical subject (ETV Bharat), and the CBSE fee at Rs 1,600 for five subjects, Rs 320 for each extra subject and Rs 160 per Class 12 practical subject (Moneycontrol). The units differ, and school fees are separate.
Does CBSE give better results than RBSE?
We cannot compare the pass percentages fairly. The students, schools, papers and counting rules differ. The 2026 RBSE Class 10 pass rate was 94.23 per cent; we did not compare it with CBSE for that reason.
Are RBSE marks accepted for NEET, JEE and CUET?
The NTA information bulletins for 2026, as summarised by Careers360 and Shiksha, accept Class 12 from a recognised board. They do not require a specific board. Check the latest bulletin on nta.ac.in for your exam.
Do both boards have two Class 10 exams?
CBSE introduced a second Class 10 exam in May from 2026, to improve up to three subjects. RBSE is reported to introduce a similar system from 2026-27, but reports differ on details.
Can I move from RBSE to CBSE after Class 10?
Schools set their own admission rules for Class 11. Ask the school that you want to join. A migration certificate was listed on the RBSE student services page at Rs 200, but the page is undated.
