What is BSTC? BSTC is a teacher-training course for people who want to teach in primary classes. In Rajasthan, you apply for an entrance exam (called Pre BSTC or Pre D.El.Ed), your marks decide your rank, and counselling gives you a college seat for the two-year course. After that, you can apply for primary-teacher recruitment.

BSTC full form and meaning
The usual expansion is Basic School Teaching Certificate. Some reports write Basic School Teaching Course; both mean the same programme. “Basic school” is the older term for elementary or primary school. So the name tells you what the course prepares you for.

Reports from 2019 already described the Pre D.El.Ed exam as “formerly known as BSTC”, and the 2026 VMOU general directions carry the same line under the exam title. NCTE’s regulations call the national programme the Diploma in Elementary Education, D.El.Ed, which is why the name changed.

The most common confusion is that the exam and the course have almost the same name. The exam is only the gate; the course is two years of training.

Who should do BSTC?
BSTC suits you if you finished Class 12 and want to become a primary teacher without waiting for graduation. It is also the preferred route for early starters because the course starts right after Class 12. If you already have a degree, you can also look at B.Ed through PTET, but the two are not the same, as explained in BSTC vs B.Ed and BSTC vs PTET.
BSTC is a poor choice if you want a secondary or senior-secondary teaching post only. Those posts need other qualifications.

Career after BSTC

Is BSTC worth it? A numbers check
Before you pay fees, compare seats with jobs. These are our own calculations from reported figures, not an official forecast:

The point is not to scare you. It is to plan: a BSTC seat is a licence to compete, not a job. Students who work on the recruitment syllabus during the two years do better than those who only wait for the result. We could not verify how many seats stay vacant each year, so we do not put a figure on that.
What BSTC does not give you
- A government job by itself. Recruitment is a separate exam and selection.
- The right to teach classes 9 and above. Those posts need B.Ed and a graduation or higher degree.

What is Pre BSTC?
